Accenture's latest information management survey of more than 1,000 managers at large U.S. and U.K. companies quantifies what many of us already recognize: a lack of aligned structured and unstructured data sources; a lot of compartmentalized information on desktops and Exchange servers; and a related poor collaborative use of information. Some of the data points are particularly deflating. Managers find it easier to find information on competitors than on their own company; more than half the information they find has no value; and half say internal management and governance processes are inadequate.
"We were a bit surprised that just 16 percent of managers use a collaborative portal and that most information is stored in emails and local hard drives", says Greg Todd, senior executive with Accenture's information management practice.
"It shows that the collaborative value of a comprehensive information management capability has yet to be realized for most companies."
